Elsie  M.  (Kingsbury) Smythe – 97, of North Reading, passed away at her home peacefully on her heavenly journey on Sunday, July 24, 2022. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles W. “Ted” Smythe.

Born in Everett, MA on June 26, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Homer A., Sr. and Sarah C. (O’Hanley) Kingsbury. She was a graduate of Somerville High School. She worked for Sears and Robuck in Boston for many years and later for the Harvard Coop in Cambridge. Elsie was a resident of North Reading since 1979 and a member of St. Theresa’s Church.

She enjoyed cooking for her family, dancing at Mosleys by the Charles and all kinds of music. She was very devoted to our Blessed Mother Mary. Elsie was grateful for the loving care she received from her son Dan and his wife Barbara.

Family members  include her sons, Daniel F. Lynch, Sr. and his wife Barbara of Medford and  the late Richard J. Lynch; her brother, Homer Kingsbury of Somerville; daughters-in-law, Susan Lynch of Riverside, CA and Joanne Smythe of Alabama ; brother-in-law, Robert Litchfield of Florida; late siblings;  Eve Kane, Virginia Manning, Audrey Litchfield and John Kingsbury;  10 loving  grandchildren, Andrea, Richard, Kathy, William, Sarah, Jason, Kevin, Kara, Jaime and Danny Boy; 21 great grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held from the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading on Thursday, July 28 at 9:15 AM followed by a 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at St. Theresa’s Church, 63 Winter Street, North Reading. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 27 from 6 to 8 PM. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in North Reading. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9929.

Rudolf  R. “Rudy” Boentgen – 80, of North Reading and formerly of New York City, NY, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Winchester Hospital.

Born in New York City, NY on January 12. 1942. He was the son of the late Rudolf and Helen (Mueller) Boentgen. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and he received his Master’s Degree from Northeastern University.

Rudolf was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran, he was a First Lieutenant and served from 1961 to 1966.

He worked as a Mechanical Engineer at AVCO, Teledyne Engineering Corporation, Instron Corporation and NSTAR. He was technically minded and his homemade R/C Boat won his school’s Science Fair prize. He was the author of several academic white papers, he was a founding member of the Boston Audio Society and he dabbled in poetry. Rudolf enjoyed model building, sports cars and Hi-Fi audio systems.

He was a member of the Boylston Schul-Verein, Porsche Club of America and Boston Audio Society

He has been a resident of North Reading for the past 48 years and was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Lynnfield for many years.

Family members include his Loving wife of 42 years, Joanna (Kotce) Boentgen; his son, Rudolf  C. Boentgen and his daughter, Kristen J. Boentgen.

His funeral will be held on Monday, July 18 at 10:30 AM at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading. Visitation will be held on Sunday July 17 from 4 to 7 PM. Catherine M. (Keefe) Girard – 79, of North Reading, formerly of North Andover, Newburyport, Peabody, and Revere passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022.

Born in Revere on November 27, 1942, she was the loving daughter of the late Amelia (McGrath) Keefe and John Keefe.  She was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Revere.

Catherine leaves two daughters, Debbie (Girard) Walton and her husband Todd, of Kingston, NH and Lynne (Girard) Copelas and her husband George of North Reading.  She has 4 grandchildren, Kelsey Walton, Nick Copelas, Kristina Copelas and Kaitlyn Copelas who were her pride and joy of life.  Sister of the late John Keefe, Barbara DiPasquale and Margaret Keefe.

Affectionately, called Nana, she was a loving Mother and Grandmother.  She was kind, loving, and caring to all her family and friends.  She loved to play games with the grandchildren, cook, watch old classics like Bonanza and Gunsmoke, local news and loved to help others.

After raising her children, Catherine worked for Boston Gas Company for 20 years and as a legal secretary before retiring.

Visiting hours and service will be held at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.  Visiting hours from 4-7PM, service to follow at 7PM.

Arline H. (DeAngelis) Whyel – 82, of North Reading, formerly of Chelsea and
East Boston, died Friday, July 8, 2022, at Winchester Hospital.

Born in East Boston, MA on July 13, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Frances (Sarni) DeAngelis. She was a graduate of East Boston High School.  Arline worked as an administrative assistant at Mass General Hospital in Boston for 35 years. She also worked as a Travel Agent and was very passionate about working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, where she devoted her time and energy to the kids like no other.

She was a devoted wife to her husband John of 60 years and loving and caring mother to Laurice and John.

Arline loved to travel with her family and experienced seeing the world together.  She has been a resident of North Reading for the past 18 years and was a member of St. Theresa’s Church.

Family members include loving husband John A. Whyel; her daughter Laurice Saggese and her husband Gary; her son, John J. Whyel and his wife Julia Guthro; her loving sister Margaret Frances and her brother Joseph DeAngelis and his wife Patricia; she was the proud grandmother of Nicholas Whyel and Taylor Saggese.  She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.

Sharon E. (Germano) McGillivray – 62, of North Reading, formerly of Lynn and Danvers, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 26, 2022. She was surrounded at home by her entire family and left just as the sun began to rise over her bird feeders.

A miracle baby, born two months premature in Lynn, MA on September 28, 1959, she was the daughter of the late Richard H. and Barbara A. (Bump) Germano. She was a graduate of Lynn English High School, Class of 1977. She would then go on to graduate from Salem State College, Class of 1982.

Sharon worked as a Certified Public Accountant for The Children’s Center for Communication / Beverly School for the Deaf. She was also self-employed, doing bookkeeping, accounting and Quickbooks services for numerous clients.

She had been a resident of North Reading for the past 35 years, acting as the home’s general contractor, landscaper, gardener and fierce protector and leader of 1 husband, 2 children, 5 chickens, 1 cat (Gus) and 1 dog (Otis). A Girl Scout leader, Masquers mom, Bell Choir player, Tuesday’s Lady Group Talker, bird and butterfly watcher, legendary chocolate chip cookie maker and member of the Union Congregational Church were just a handful of her enjoyments.

From Nicholas Cage to Nikola Tesla, aliens to conspiracy theories and medicine to religion, there wasn’t a subject that she wouldn’t read about, research, Google and discuss with anyone willing to engage (and a few that wouldn’t!).

Quick to laugh and constantly smiling, she was practically perfect in every way.

Family members include her loving husband of 34 years, Kevin McGillivray; her son, Mark McGillivray and his fiancée, Lacey Jeka, of Brooklyn, NY; her daughter, Erin McGillivray of North Reading and her inseparable sisters and their spouses, Carole Germano and Jan Saulnier of Gloucester and Barbara and Al DeDonato of Danvers. She was also loved by Lucille McGillivray of Dighton, MA; Pamela and Michael Lafferty of Canton, MA; Nancy and Dan Morrison of Terrell, NC and David McGillivray of Bellingham, MA. She was extremely proud of and dearly loved, and was loved by, her 3 nieces and 3 nephews – Erica, Jordan, Elizabeth, Erik, Matt & Alyssa.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 12 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading. Her funeral service will follow at the Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill Street, North Reading, at 11:30 followed by a Collation at 12:00 PM.
