Jean M. (O’Dowd) Howe – 87, of Summerfield, Florida and formerly of North Reading, died on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard T. Howe.

Born in Stoneham, MA on August 30, 1934. She was the daughter of the late James F. and Alice Marie (Gormlie) O’Dowd. She was raised and attended school in Reading and was a graduate of Reading Memorial High School.

Jean was a secretary for the American Mutual Insurance Company and MECO Incorporated. She also worked for the Reading Hallmark store. She was a former resident of North Reading for 34 years and a member of St. Theresa’s Church.

Jean was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Jean enjoyed dancing and playing numerous card games.  She was an avid crossword and jigsaw puzzle fan.

Family members include her sons, Richard T. Howe, Jr. and Robert A. Howe and his wife Pamela, all of Summerfield, FL and Derek J. Howe and his wife Kimberly of North Reading; daughters, Susan J. White and her husband George of Lawrence and Laurie A. Howe and her partner Deborah Smith, of Summerfield, FL; sister of Sandra Smith of Engelwood, FL and sister of the late Michael and Timothy O’Dowd; grandmother of Ashley, Chris, Kelly, Stacy and Annika Howe; great grandmother of Trevor Howe, Vincent and Evelyn Terranova.

Her Funeral will be held at St. Theresa’s Church, 63 Winter St., North Reading on Wednesday, June 29 at 10:30 AM, Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 28 from 4 to 7 PM at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow St., North Reading. Teresa A. (Lanteigne) Valente – 59, of Londonderry, NH and formerly of Reading and Atkinson, NH, passed away at her home, surrounded by her family on Monday, March 21, 2022.

Born in Montague, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was the daughter of the late Hughet and Beatrice (Acorn) Lanteigne.

Teresa completed elementary school also hair dressing school in Malden, MA. Until her kids were grown, she had several full time jobs, she worked for the Lawrence Eagle Tribune, The Pie Guy, Thermal Fisher, RGIS, and other part time jobs. Teresa was a homemaker and a stay-at-home mom.

She loved going to the beach, BBQs with family and hanging out with the kids and their friends. Teresa enjoyed visiting family, trips to PEI, Canada and short trips with family, she tried to make strangers feel like family. She was a fire cracker. She loved her cats and dogs and other animals. She enjoyed doing ceramics, floral arrangements, going to flea markets, antique stores and cake decorating.

Family members include her loving sons, Michael S. Valente and  Ryan M. Valente daughters, Sarah M. Valente and Nicole E. Valente; brothers, Eddie Lanteigne, Johnny Lanteigne , Terry Lanteigne and the late Charlie Lanteigne; sisters, Betty Geist, Mary Putis, Priscilla (Kitty) Lanteigne and the late Leona Greenwood; grand children, Giovanna, Arianna, Christian, Beckford Valente & David P. Doan Valente ,Dominic, Ethan, Bradley, Marley Bea MacDonald, Anthony and Dylan Valente. Also brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 PM at St. Theresa’s Church, 63 Winter Street (Rt. 62), North Reading. There will be no calling hours. Arline Lumb-Garlington (nee Hoyt) of North Reading, MA passed away in her home in the care of her devoted family on March 20, 2022 at the age of 88. Born in Stoneham, MA on April 29,1933, she is predeceased by her first husband, Dave Lumb.

The eldest of ten children, Arline was a devoted sister, helping to raise her nine siblings, and continuing to be known as the “mother hen” throughout her life. Arline was ‘info central’ of the family and could be depended on to know important dates and addresses, a fact that only makes sense considering Arline began her career as one of North Reading’s original switchboard operators.  Later, she worked nights as a billing clerk in various trucking companies while she raised her four children.

After Dave’s passing in 1992, Arline wed Chuck Garlington in 2000. Throughout their 22 years of marriage, she introduced Chuck to cross country skiing and snowshoeing and Chuck attempted to keep up with her during multiple 20-mile Walks for Hunger. Arline brought happiness, sunshine, and the light of Christ to Chuck’s life and for that he will be forever thankful.

Arline will be remembered as a fantastic cook and avid recipe collector who loved trying new recipes, especially those from her Polish heritage. The cookie jar was always full at Arline’s house, filled to the brim with homemade treats and cookies. She was a member of the Union Congregational Church in North Reading for 50 years, volunteering her time to deliver flowers to community members and pose as Mrs. Claus for Christmas photos. Arline loved the ocean in Maine and annual apple picking picnics with her family. She enjoyed wearing hats even before she became a member of the Red Hat Society, was a thoughtful, caring neighbor and a faithful friend.

Arline is survived by her husband, Charles Garlington; her children, Sharon Johnson and her husband Steve of Tucson, AZ; Thomas Lumb and his wife Denise of North Reading, MA; Kim Johnson of Tewksbury, MA; and Dave Lumb and his wife Syndie of North Reading, MA. Her grandchildren, Stacy, T.J., Tim, Jeff, Brad, and Keith. And her great grandchildren Cory and Blake.

Visitation will be at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow St., North Reading on Friday, March 25 from 5 to 8 PM. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, March 26 at 10:00 AM at the Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill St., North Reading.

Charles J. “Charlie” Rogan, 95, of North Reading, passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness on March 21, 2022, surrounded by his children.

Charles was born in Chelsea, Ma. on April 15th, 1926. The son of Helen (Corr) Rogan of Everett, and Thomas J. Rogan of Medford, Charles grew up in Franklin and Medford, graduating from Medford High School in 1943. Upon graduation he began working at General Electric, pausing only to serve his country as an Army Corporal during World War II. Over the course of a career at GE spanning 44 years, Charles worked his way up from a forklift driver to Senior Import/Export Traffic Analyst. He married Elizabeth L. “Bette” (Hurley) Rogan in 1950, they moved to North Reading in 1952 and enjoyed 60 years together until her passing in 2010.

“The Mayor of LeClair Street” was known and loved for his steadfast, selfless devotion to Bette, unconditional love for his children and grandchildren, his quick wit and love of a good (or bad) pun. He was a member of the American Legion and in his spare time enjoyed fishing, gardening, candlepin bowling, cooking, watching auto racing and playing cards. He also loved traveling, and he and Bette took frequent road trips up and down the East Coast.

Charles is survived by his children, Charles Rogan Jr. and his wife Christine of North Oxford, Ma., David Rogan and his wife Mary of Chicago, Denis Rogan and his wife Sandra of Chicago, Brian Rogan of North Reading, Izzy Oneiric and her husband Louis Maistros of Arabi, La. as well as his loving grandsons Charles Rogan III, Christopher Rogan, and Brendan Rogan. He is predeceased by his sisters Therese Claire Rogan and Margaret Hain.

Arrangements are in the care of Croswell Funeral Home. Services will be private, and in lieu of flowers Charlie wanted people to take their families out to dinner. Those who would like to make a donation in his memory may do so in care of the American Legion.

Douglas R. Lipert, 81 – Of Northborough and formerly of North Reading and Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2022 at the UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

Born in Milwaukee, WI on May 23, 1940. He was the son of the late Anthony and Winona G. (Olson) Lipert. Doug was raised and attended school in Wiconsin. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from 1958 to 1961, he was assigned to the U.S.S. Bristol.

Doug worked for many years as a self employed electrician. He also worked for several years as an Industrial truck driver. Prior to the service, he was a butter maker in Wisconsin. Doug was a former resident of North Reading for 63 years and he loved Harley Davidson motor cycling since 1957.

He was a member of the U.S.S. Bristol Veteran’s Association, American Legion Post No. 234, Harley Davidson Association and the U.S.S. Cassin Young Volunteers in Charlestown.

He was the loving husband of Holly G. (Lechtur) Lipert and the late Marianne E. (Silva) Lipert; Loving father of Lori Jean Lipert Berg of Chelmsford, Brad Lipert of Chesapeake, VA, Jeffrey Lipert of Navarre, FL and Douglas Lipert of Sanford, ME; brothers, Carrington and Jerry Lipert and his late sister, Peggy Lee Lipert; 8 grandchildren; Mark, Joel, Lee Ann, Skyla, JD, Jackie, Ryan and Samantha, 5 great grandchildren; Makala, Madison, Victoria, Quinlan and Xander.

Graveside services will be held in Riverside Cemetery on Thursday, March 24 at 11:30 AM. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading.
