Patrick held a Bachelor's Degree in tuba performance from The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, as well as a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island.  At the time of his death, he was working towards a Master's Degree in Musicology at the Conservatory with a focus on non-western music.

For over thirty years, Patrick was employed by The New England Conservatory music libraries, first as a cataloger and reference librarian, and later as the head of Technical Services.

Patrick was a loving husband for 31 years to his wife, Alice, and an unconditionally supportive and devoted father to his daughter, Bethany, and was enthusiastically involved in all of her interests.  A voracious reader with insatiable curiosity, he was a rare thing: an intellectual with a lot of practical knowledge and know-how.  Despite his intellect (or maybe because of it,) he had a wonderful sense of humor that often bordered on the "goofy."  Patrick believed that anything worth doing was worth doing right, and he eagerly volunteered both his time and talents when needed to both his church and his community.

Patrick loved studying orchestral scores, and his great interest and vast knowledge of forgotten masterpieces of the 19th century instrumental repertoire provided an invaluable resource to the Boston music community, members of which often consulted him for programming suggestions.

Insightful and reflective, Patrick once said that, despite his illness, he truly believed that "happiness is a choice you can make every day."

A talented and respected tuba player, Patrick played with many local groups, including more recently, the Lakeside Brass Quintet, the Reading Town Band, and Happy Feet Dance Orchestra. Patrick  had a lovely baritone voice and enjoyed appearing in many community theater productions.  He also sang professionally with the choir at Old South Church during the 1980s, and for the last 20 years sang in the choir of the Second Congregational Church of  Winchester.

Patrick was the loving husband of  Alice A. McDonald-Maxfield;  devoted father of Bethany G. Maxfield of Brooklyn, New York;  son of Robert E. and  Dorothy Joline (Hackman) Maxfield of Atlanta, GA;  brother of Stephen Maxfield of Arlington, TX,  Michael and Jack Maxfield, both of Atlanta, GA.

A memorial service will be held at the  Second Congregational Church of  Winchester, 485 Washington Street, Winchester, MA on Saturday, March 23, at 11 AM. There will be no calling hours and interment will be held at a later date in Dunbarton Center Cemetery in Dunbarton, NH.
