Francis “Chester” Dalton

Francis “Chester” Dalton – 89, of North Reading and formerly of Chelsea, died Saturday, January 13, 2018, at the Woodbriar Health Center in Wilmington.

Born in Fort Augustus, Prince Edward Island, Canada on May 14, 1928. Chester left school at a young age to work on the farm for his mother and father. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He received the Army of Occupation Medal Germany and a Bronze Star Medal.

Chester was a manager for Superior Column, he retired after 44 years of service. He was a very hard worker all of his life. He helped many people building homes and doing various repair work. He provided for his five children, which he loved so much.

He loved gardening, fishing and had a great love for Prince Edward Island. He has been a resident of North Reading for the past 60 years and a member of St. Theresa’s Church. He was also a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Saugus V.F.W.

Family members include his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret “Charlotte” (Hughes) Dalton; sons, James Dalton and his wife Cheryl, Shawn Dalton and the late Wayne Dalton; daughters, Paula Sollazzo and her husband Frank and Pamela Howe and her husband Bobbie; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn Gill and Thelma Woolridge and the brother of the late Arnold, Bill, Mellie, Eddy, Frank, Pauline, Rita, Lawrence, Emmett and Ivan.

His funeral will be held from the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading on Friday, January 19 at 9:15 AM, followed by a 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at St. Theresa’s Church 63 Winter Street (Rt. 62), North Reading. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 18 from 4 to 8 PM. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery in North Reading. We are first cousins of Charlotte; and my husband Ray is a first cousin of Cheddy’s. We have many fond memories of their visits to our community over the years.     We all loved Chetty and loved to have him visit with us. His stories of early life in Fort Augustus and especially his memories with my dad and mom always brought joy and tears to my eyes.
    Chetty enjoyed the company of every age from babies to the elderly. He was a captivating man who has compassion and love for all living things.
    My family will greatly miss Chetty and we know that he will find great peace and love in his Heavenly Kingdom.

  4. Cheddy was a good hearted man. He was always kind. A wonderful family man who loved fishing and cookouts and a game of horseshoes. I will miss seeing you around in the summer stopping for a chat heading to uncle Ray’s. Sorry for your loss to all those who knew him.

  7. Dear Charlotte, Paula, Pam, Jimmy, Shawn and families, our sincere condolences on the passing of Uncle Chetty. Our memories of Chetty are filled with laughter, love and great times. Our trips through Boston would not be complete without an evening at Chetty and Charlotte’s. Chetty also reminded me so much of my father, Melvin Dalton. Thank you for all the wonderful memories Chetty, your life was well lived and we will always think of you with warm and loving thoughts.
